The" Singing Dunes" appeared on the open rocky plain between the mountains Big and Small Kalkan. The dune area is 240 hectares, it consists of two dunes: the South, with a height of 150 m and North about 100 meters. The absolute heights of the ridges of dunes reach 600-650 meters.  Great southern dune makes a special impression , representing a mountain of pure crystal sand without a single blade of grass with steep slopes, which are impossible to climb up. The history of the origin of sand dunes associated with the wind - there are often strong winds. For centuries, Western and Eastern winds blowing along the Kalkan mountains and The Ili river brought masses of sand with them and collided at the junction of the Big and Small Kalkan mountains, i.e. a "wind rose"was formed here. Grains of sand settled in this place and centuries later there was formed a huge sand mountain. Strong wind and sand movement on the slopes causes a buzz inside the dunes, similar to the sound of the jet engine. At normal wind, the top of the dune as if steaming from blowing sand. It is curious that barchan does not roam on the plain, despite the fluctuation of sand and strong winds, and stays at the place for several millennia.The Nature of the origin of the sounds of barchan has been studied by many scientists, but a single solution was not found. The mystery of the barchan's sound has generated a lot of folk legends, which have existed up to now. Now " Singing barchan " is included in the list of" 7 wonders of Kazakhstan " by popular vote and has the official status of the state nature monument of national importance.
